I always knew that I wanted to work with children, so when I attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, I focused my studies on child/adolescent development and Play Therapy. Since graduating in 2012, I have had the privelege of training under several prominent mentors in this area to cultivate a client-centered, developmental approach–- using directive and nondirective play, toys, games, art, and skills training to “meet a child where they’re at”. I have worked with individuals, groups, and families in multiple settings, facilitating growth and change to address varying diagnoses and life events. I actively seek to further my knowledge and abilities in pediatrics through continuing education related to Play Therapy, diagnosis, child and adolescent development, and incorporative techniques.
Above all, I pride myself on stepping apart from the typical “adult“ role to be an approachable, nonjudgmental, energetic playmate who works WITH a child to tackle life’s obstacles. In Play Therapy, I provide certain toys, games, and materials so a child is able to come in and express whatever emotions they are experiencing. By observing the child at play, I am able to understand the child’s world and help them make sense of that world to resolve their presenting problems. I practice what is called “child-centered” Play Therapy, where children are the experts of their own life experiences and are allowed to direct their play in a safe, accepting environment.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and will soon be credentialed as a Registered Play Therapist (RPT) through the Association for Play Therapy. In 2012, I earned my Master's degree in Counselor Education from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
